2 things every freelancer should know about marketing on social media

When you’re a freelancer, it can be tough to know where to start when it comes to marketing. You don’t have a team of people who can take care of the details for you, so you need to make sure that you’re doing everything right.

Here’s 2 things every creative freelancer should know about marketing themselves on social media: 

  1. You don’t need 10,000 followers or 1,000,000 likes to win for your business
    1. I get it. Hundreds of likes and followers are nice for clout. However, all you need is 1 sale to get the ball for your business rolling.
  2. Always be 51% giving
    1. This goes for any successful business or brand on social media. Giving your best knowledge for free, giving away your insights, giving other people nice comments—it’s all part of growing and maintaining a healthy community on social platforms. 

Social media isn’t rocket science, but it is an art.

“Trust the process.” What does it mean, why should we do it?

When it comes to social media, lots of gurus and experts will tell you to trust the process. What does this vague term, “the process” entail? 

For starters, the process is the journey. 

It’s the self doubt, the inner critic, and the perfectionism getting in the way of things. 

it’s the starting from zero and not having a clue of where to begin. 

It’s the trying everything and seeing what sticks. 

It’s starting with 0 followers. 

It’s getting varied engagement with your content because you wanted to try something new. 

It’s trying to address your criticism and learning how to move forward.

Trusting the process is knowing that there’s a little piece of progress made toward the bigger goal every day. 

You trust it because you’re trying. 

You trust it because you see progress from putting your hours in.

If your hands are in any part of the process above, you’re already on your way to winning. 

Keep trusting the process.

From 0 to your first 100, grow your social media presence and build your brand as a creative

When it comes to social media, the only way to grow your presence is by posting content. 

Content will be the reason why people will trust you.

Content will be the reason why people will follow you.

Content will generate business success and opportunities for you.

As Gary Vaynerchuck puts it, your brand = your reputation. 

And content builds your brand. 

Keep posting.

The law of diminishing returns on the writing process

Every written post has a point. 

Once that point has been delivered in writing, the rest is just extra. 

The minute you’ve made your point, you have your piece. 

No point? No piece. 

Grammar edits, restructuring, and nitpicking punctuation come after you’ve hit the threshold of diminishing returns in the writing process. 

Wrap up. 


Move onto the next thing. 

Artists and designers get a bad rep for not being able to market themselves

(Yeah I’m still working on it too).

If you’re wondering how to get your work to more eyes, here’s the 1 thing I did to make that happen for me when running social media for our family business.

Post. A lot. 

Like 3-8 times a day. Every day.

And post about different things, not just the same thing every single time.

Pictures, videos, reels, stories, 5 star reviews, screenshots of comments—everything counts. 

It sounds like a lot of work, because it kind of is (sorry). 

But the reward for being a student of the Share button is what you make it. 

The more times you are able to publish content and get your work seen, the more opportunity you are opening yourself up to. 

And vice versa.

That’s that. 

My biggest challenge as a designer who wanted to share content with the world

*Hint: It wasn’t with visuals or aesthetics. I had that part down for the most part. 

It was with my insecurities. 

The hardest part of the entire process was with my thought processes. 


“It’s not good enough.” 

“i don’t think this will get enough likes.” 

“I haven’t made it perfect yet so I’m not going to share it.” *Forgets about it and never ends up posting anything*

“Sillybanana1101 thought my art was dumb on the last post. Should I even continue?”

It sounds kind of silly, but this was my world in 2019. 

Thankfully, everything turned around with a few tweaks to the way I thought about myself that same year.

How to be an artist on social media, grow your audience, and find your spot in the market

You’re a creative. 

You make killer work. 

You want people to see and be impacted by what you do. 

Sound familiar? 

If so, you need to market yourself. 

But how?

This is where social media comes in. 

Social media is free for everyone to use. Literally everyone (4.4 billion) is already on it and is using it daily. 

Now the question is, how do you get your art out in front of other people? 

How will others find you?

Let’s dive right in. 

1. Here’s how to be an artist on social media:

To be an artist on social media, you must share your work in service of others. 

That is, publishing work regardless of perfect (because perfect is selfish). 

You must adopt the mindset of serving others before yourself. 

You must also publish as often as you can to build up your own body of work. This will help others understand what you can do for them. 

  1. Grow your audience. 

Followers can be bought, but an audience has to be built. 

I’ll explain. 

The number of followers you have doesn’t mean anything if there is no actual community supporting you along the way. 

When it comes to content, quantity > quality. 

But when it comes to audience, quality > quantity

At the end of the day, your audience are the people who will look at your stuff and buy from you. 

And to build your audience? Simply engage with the kinds of people who will find your stuff relevant. 

  1. Find your spot in the market.

This one is the trickiest of the 3.

It’s the trickiest because your spot in the market can change over time. 

Finding your positioning isn’t an answer you can find from a google search or textbook.

Finding your positioning takes consistent execution of content and engagement with your audience. 

It will take time for you to find your spot and nail it down. 

Sometimes months, or even years. 

This is the part where you need most patience.

But I promise you if you do steps 1 and 2 consistently and successfully, your spot in the market will come. 

It will come because by then you will have built your brand. 

Being an artist on social media doesn’t have to be hard. 

There is a formula, and it’s been tried and true for many.

Nobody Talks About This Secret to Making Good Content

I’ve noticed something. 

For every dozen pieces of content I create for Tiktok and Instagram, one or two posts perform significantly better than the rest.

Again, for every 12 posts we share only 3-4 will perform well. 

Does that mean the other 8-9 should not be published? 

No, that’s not the point. 

Instead, the point is this. 

Oftentimes you will not know which pieces of content will take off. 

The secret to creating good content is purely publishing whatever you can that is ether helpful or entertaining, **as many times as you can.**

The practice of doing so will help you learn what your audience likes and dislikes. 

This is the only way to make good content for your intended audience. 

It’s just taking action. 



And doing it better the next time.

Good content is about connecting with your viewers, and making them feel like they have a spot to be themselves.

How to face the dread from a blank page

The project you want to start—but haven’t yet.

The feeling is pulling at you, isn’t it?

There’s a pressure to begin, but you don’t know how, or where.

Familiar with the feeling?

It’s the feeling of a blank page you hesitate to fill up because you worry about imperfections.

It’s much easier to put it all away and avoid starting altogether.

But, you’re not a quitter.

Everyone who’s faced a dreaded blank page knows the secret to overcoming a blank is to start with the smallest step forward. 

It’s not to write an entire essay, or a paragraph, or even a sentence. The smallest step forward would be to jot down a note. Something incomplete, rough, and workable.

The smallest step forward, again and again and again. 

Soon enough, the page won’t seem blank anymore.
