If you’re a creative freelancer but hate sales and marketing, you need to reframe yourself ASAP

The number one reason why creatives hate sales and marketing is because it gives them the ICK factor.

There’s something off-putting about self promotion.

It feels weird, and almost wrong, to pitch your craft.

You feel emotionally allergic to promoting your own work.

I get it.

Before I went into marketing, I was a freelance fashion illustrator.

I hated having to promote myself.

In the end, I realized the reason why I hated self promotion was because I was doing it all wrong.

I thought sales and marketing had to be all about ME.

Turns out, the way to better sales and marketing is to make it about THEM (your audience).

Don’t pitch.

Ask questions.

Don’t self-promote.

Listen to other people’s problems.

Don’t sell.

Until they’re dying to have your help.

If you do this, you’ll feel more helpful than icky.

And that’s what marketing is all about.
